New ASME NQA 1 2012 Edition due in March for Q. A. Requirements for Nuclear Facility Applications

Quality Assurance requirements are a high priority in all nuclear power plants and fuel processing plants, so it’s important to note that there’s a new ASME NQA 1-2012 that will be available from Document Center Inc. at the end of March, 2013.  The new standard, titled “Quality Assurance Requirements for Nuclear Facility Applications,” will be released from the printers at that time and can be pre-ordered now.

NQA 1 is one of the primary standards for implementing federal regulations established by the DOE (Department of Energy).  It provides requirements and guidelines for the establishment and execution of quality assurance programs during siting, design, construction, operation and decommissioning.  The standard reflects industry experience and current understanding of the quality assurance requirements necessary to achieve safe, reliable, and efficient utilization of nuclear energy, and management and processing of radioactive materials.

ASME NQA 1 focuses on the achievement of results, emphasizes the role of the individual and line management in the achievement of quality, and fosters the application of these requirements in a manner consistent with the relative importance of the item or activity.

It’s divided into 4 parts:

  • Requirements for Quality Assurance Programs for Nuclear Facilities.
  • Quality Assurance Requirements for Nuclear Facility Applications.
  • Non-mandatory Guidance and Application Appendices
  • Non-mandatory Appendices: Positions and Applications Matrices.

The document is usually reviewed every three to four years.  The new edition replaces ASME NQA 1-2008, which is now obsolete.

New AMS 2400 Revision X for Cadmium Plating and AMS 2402 Revision K for Zinc Plating

SAE’s Finishes Processes And Fluids Committee has been busy lately!  There’s another 2 new revisions for important Aerospace Plating Specifications, and they’re available now from Document Center Inc. Here’s more information:

AMS 2400, Revision X, “Plating, Cadmium.”  This specification covers the requirements for electrodeposited cadmium on metal parts.

AMS 2402, Revision K, “Plating, Zinc.”  This specification covers the requirements for electrodeposited zinc plating. FYI: Unless otherwise stated on the engineering drawing, high strength steel parts having a hardness of 45 HRC or greater shall not be electroplated.

The revisions are the results of the usual five-year review process at SAE.  Documents are routinely checked every five years to determine if the document is still valid.  The result?  Either a reaffirmation that the document is OK as is, or a new revision is released with the appropriate changes.

Find more plating specs on our Document Center website section, Find Standards By Industry Sector.  This area of our store allows you to browse lists of standards appropriate for your industry.

Meantime, if you need to order SAE standards, they are available for sale in either paper or pdf format at www.document-center.com.  We’ve been an authorized dealer of SAE standards since the 1980’s and can assist you with the many questions that come up from time to time on these documents.  Or contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com) if that works better for you!

New 2012 Editions available for ASME Y14.1 and ASME Y14.1M – Drawing Sheet Size and Format

Drafting standards are some of the most commonly use standards available, so when one of the most popular titles is revised it’s an event here at Document Center Inc.!  We’re happy to let you know that there are new 2012 editions available for both ASME Y14.1 and ASME Y14.1M on Drawing Sheet Size and Format.

Both standards are on the same topic and both will be available in the new editions as of March 15th of this year.  The only difference is that one is for measurements in feet and inches and the other is metric.

ASME Y14.1 2012 Edition, “Decimal Inch Drawing Sheet Size and Format,” defines decimal inch sheet sizes and formats for engineering drawings.

ASME Y14.1M 2012 Edition, “Metric Drawing Sheet Size and Format,” does the same for metric sizes and formats.

Standardization of drawing sizes and the uniform location of format features on drawing forms provides definite advantages in readability, handling, filing, and reproduction.  Revision information and dates are of particular importance to users of drawings and should be located and expressed uniformly on all engineering drawings.

In using drawings made by other organizations, an advantage is gained when like items of information are in the same location on all drawings, and when uniformity of form and language is applied in making information entries.

Preorder your copies now at Document Center’s website, www.document-center.com.  Or contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  We’ll be happy to see that you get a copy as soon as they are released from the printers.

New 12th Edition released for SAE HS 1086, ASTM DS 56 — Metals and Alloys in the Unified Numbering System

“Metals and Alloys in the Unified Numbering System (UNS),” co-numbered SAE HS 1086 and ASTM DS56, has been revised and the new 12th Edition is available from Document Center Inc.  The volume provides a cross-index for nationally used metals and alloys, with a complete listing of the Unified Numbers, description and chemical composition, and finally the specifications and standards that have been released for each.

We often use this volume to assist Document Center customers determine what standards they should be using when the only information is the UNS number itself.  You can easily recognize these designators because they consist of one letter followed by 5 digits —  G10200 for carbon steel, S42400 for ferritic stainless steel, and C95710 for aluminum bronze are three examples.

Not only that, but the book also contains sections that allow the user to work in reverse.  That is, using the standard number or even a common trade designation, you can then track the kind of material that it uses.

Metals and Alloys in the Unified Numbering System” is a must-have for any company that works with metals and a common shop reference tool in many machine shops.  The 12th edition has been updated to include more than 5,600 designations, 4,100 representative specification cross references, and 15,350 trade names.

If you’re curious about how the number are assigned, there’s a standard for that!  The joint publication SAE J1086 and ASTM E527 provides you with complete information on how the numbering system works, how it is administered, and how you can request a number to be assigned for a metal not currently in the system.

Order these items at the Document Center webstore, www.document-center.com.  Or contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  We’re here to assist you with all your standards requirements and regulatory management needs.  We’ve been working with companies like yours since 1982 and can provide you with the expertise that is no longer found in many organizations.

New ASTM E1316 2013 Edition on Standard Terminology for Nondestructive Examinations

Nondestructive Testing (NDT) is a staple of many conformance requirements, so it’s no surprise that Document Center customers commonly use ASTM E1316, “Standard Terminology for Nondestructive Examinations.”  Now there’s a new ASTM E1316-13 Edition available and you can order it on Document Center’s webstore in both paper and pdf format.

The 37-page standard provides you with definitions in several sections.  These cover terms for common NDT, acoustic emission, electromagnetic testing (ET), gamma- and x-radiologic testing (RT), leak testing (LT), liquid penetrant testing (PT), magnetic particle testing (MT), neutron radiologic testing (NRT), ultrasonic testing (UT), intrared testing (IRT), and visual testing (VT).  Terminologies are explained not only with text, but also with diagrams (figures) in some cases.

The terms found in ASTM E1316-13 are intended to be used uniformly and consistently in all nondestructive testing standards.  The purpose of the standard is to promote a clear understanding and interpretation of those NDT standards in which they are used.

Oversight for ASTM NDT standards is provided by committee E07 and the compilation of these documents can be found in the Volume 03.03 of the complete set of ASTM standards.  These volumes are available in both paper and CD Rom format.  However, if you choose to use them, you need to review the status of the individual standards regularly, since in this case Document Center’s monitoring service only covers the annual updates of the volume itself.

Document Center has been selling ASTM standards under license agreement since the 1980’s.  We not only provide current editions of these standards, but also have an extensive collection of obsolete editions.  You can order on our website, www.document-center.com, or contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  As you can see, we are dedicated to improving your understanding and use of the standards that we provide.

How do I find Standards for exporting medical devices to Europe?

Many times folks like you come to Document Center when they are unsure what standards are applicable for exporting their products overseas.  And this is especially true during the certification process for exporting medical devices into the European market.  Here at Document Center, we have a number of ways to help you out.  And the easiest is to use our webpage of Harmonized Standards based on the European Directives (comparable to our federal regulations).

These lists are actually generated by the EU (European Union) itself, under what is called the “New Approach.”  This is a way to achieve compliance to a directive by an EU member nation through the mechanism of standardization.

There are three main directives for the medical device industry.  Luckily, for each of these directives there is a list of harmonized standards that meet the requirements of the legislative act.  Here’s the information on the directive and a link to our page of harmonized standards for each:

You’ll notice that the list specifies the documents only as EN (European Norm or European Standard) documents.  However, when you click the link for each item, you see the record to purchase a BS EN document.  The reason for this is that the EN documents are not released as stand-alone items, but always as republications as adopted by each European Union nation.

The BS EN copies are the official English Language editions for each EN document.  However, any EN copy in English will be the same — only the national cover sheet administration information will change, depending on what country you purchase your copy from.

Something else to be aware of is the fact that when the EU adopts an international standard (like an ISO standard), it may include European administrative information about the source material.  This is usually in the form of Annexes which cover how the adopted standard meets or fails to meet the requirements of the Directive it supports.  For this reason, you may wish to purchase EN editions of International standards, even though the source International standard will not be modified by the adoption.

These lists do change periodically, so you may want to book-mark our pages and visit them every 3 to 6 months for a quick review…

Use Document Center’s website at www.document-center.com to find but and purchase the standards you need for regulatory compliance.  Or you may prefer to contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com) for additional information or to place your order.  We are here to provide you with the standards support you need in order to manage your documentation requirements successfully.

New AMS 2771 Revision E released on Heat Treatment of Aluminum Alloy Castings

Many companies purchase their SAE standards from Document Center Inc. through our web store, www.document-center.com, or by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  Why?  Because we offer responsive personal service, expertise that is not found elsewhere, and a superior notification service.  Our customers have confidence that the standards they use are up-to-date, monitored by an organization that has been working with standards for over 30 years.

NIST Handbook 44 2013 Edition now available for Specifications, Tolerances, and Other Technical Requirements for Weighing and Measuring Devices

NIST HDBK 44, “Specifications, Tolerances, and Other Technical Requirements for Weighing and Measuring Devices,” has just be revised and the new 2013 edition is now available from Document Center Inc. in either paper or pdf format.  The handbook is published annually to support the mission of NIST’s  Office of Weights and Measures – to promote uniformity in U.S. weights and measures laws, regulations, and standards.

Handbook 44 has been around in various formats since 1918, but was first published with it’s current number and title in 1949.  It is actually written by the National Conference on Weights and Measures (NCWM), an association of State and local weights and measures officials and representatives of business, consumer groups, and Federal agencies.

Changes from the 2012 Edition of NIST Handbook 44 are included in a 2 page table found in the foreward.  You’ll see that modifications have been made to sections 2.20, 2.21, 3.30, 3.36, 5.58, 5.59, and Appendix D.  And there are other editorial changes as well (which do not affect the technical content of the handbook).  They are found in sections 1.10, 2.20, 2.21, 3.33 and 3.34.

NIST (the National Institute of Standards and Technology) has been providing the support for our national Metrology program since it’s inception as the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) back in March of 1901.  It not only provides calibration services, but also provides a leadership role for the Federal support and development of Standards and emerging technologies.  That’s why you’ll see NIST as the co-ordinator for the U.S. cybersecurity standards that we discussed in our blog last week…
