The New IEC 61000-4-11 is out now!

The new IEC 61000-4-11: Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) – Part 4-11: Testing and measurement techniques – Voltage dips, short interruptions and voltage variations immunity tests for equipment with input current up to 16 A per phase, is now in edition 3.0 and replaces the previous 2.1 edition. This section of IEC 61000 defines the immunity test method and range of preferred test levels for electrical and electronic equipment connected to low-voltage power supply networks for voltage dips, short interruptions, and voltage variations.

This applies to electrical/electronic equipment with a rated input current not exceeding 16A/phase, for 50 Hz or 60Hz networks. This document aims to establish a common reference for evaluating the immunity of electrical and electronic equipment when subjected to voltage dips. This document makes references to IEC 61000-2-8.

So What Changed?

Aside from some formatting changes, there are a few technical changes that have been made. Some sections that were optional in the previous editions are now required. Some sections were also taken out of this edition entirely. The biggest change is the addition of Appendix D which talks about the generator specification requirements for voltage, rise and fall time, and inrush current capability. to easily see the changes between editions make sure you grab the red-line edition here. Redline editions come pre-marked from the publisher and clearly show the changes that were made this time around.

New IEC 61587-3 Edition 2.0 released on Mechanical structures for electronic equipment

IEC 61587-3 Edition 2.0, “Mechanical structures for electronic equipment – Tests for IEC 60917 and IEC 60297 – Part 3: Electromagnetic shielding performance tests for cabinets and subracks,” has just been released and you can buy the standard in paper or pdf format from Document Center Inc.  IEC 61587-3:2013 specifies the tests for empty cabinets and subracks for electromagnetic shielding performance, in the frequency range of 30 MHz to 3000 MHz.

The IEC 60297 and IEC 60917 series provide the stipulated attenuation values for the definition of the shielding performance level of cabinets and subracks.  The shielding performance levels are chosen with respect to the requirements of the typical fields of industrial application.

IEC 61587-3:2013 cancels and replaces IEC 61587-3:2006 (Edition 1.0) as it is a technical revision. The main changes are the correction of the errors of EM code descriptions.  Also, the frequency range for the shielding performance is extended up to 3000 MHz.

Other standards in the series include:

  • IEC 61587-1, Edition 3.0: Mechanical structures for electronic equipment – Tests for IEC 60917 and IEC 60297 series – Part 1: Environmental requirements, test set-up and safety aspects for cabinets, racks, subracks and chassis under indoor conditions
  • IEC 61587-2, Edition 2.0: Mechanical structures for electronic equipment – Tests for IEC 60917 and 60297 – Part 2: Seismic tests for cabinets and racks
  • IEC 61587-4, Edition 1.0: Mechanical structures for electronic equipment – Tests for IEC 60917 and IEC 60297 series – Part 4: Combination of performance levels for modular cabinets
