Quality Assurance requirements are a high priority in all nuclear power plants and fuel processing plants, so it’s important to note that there’s a new ASME NQA 1-2012 that will be available from Document Center Inc. at the end of March, 2013. The new standard, titled “Quality Assurance Requirements for Nuclear Facility Applications,” will be released from the printers at that time and can be pre-ordered now.
NQA 1 is one of the primary standards for implementing federal regulations established by the DOE (Department of Energy). It provides requirements and guidelines for the establishment and execution of quality assurance programs during siting, design, construction, operation and decommissioning. The standard reflects industry experience and current understanding of the quality assurance requirements necessary to achieve safe, reliable, and efficient utilization of nuclear energy, and management and processing of radioactive materials.
ASME NQA 1 focuses on the achievement of results, emphasizes the role of the individual and line management in the achievement of quality, and fosters the application of these requirements in a manner consistent with the relative importance of the item or activity.
It’s divided into 4 parts:
- Requirements for Quality Assurance Programs for Nuclear Facilities.
- Quality Assurance Requirements for Nuclear Facility Applications.
- Non-mandatory Guidance and Application Appendices
- Non-mandatory Appendices: Positions and Applications Matrices.
The document is usually reviewed every three to four years. The new edition replaces ASME NQA 1-2008, which is now obsolete.
