Nondestructive Testing (NDT) is a staple of many conformance requirements, so it’s no surprise that Document Center customers commonly use ASTM E1316, “Standard Terminology for Nondestructive Examinations.” Now there’s a new ASTM E1316-13 Edition available and you can order it on Document Center’s webstore in both paper and pdf format.
The 37-page standard provides you with definitions in several sections. These cover terms for common NDT, acoustic emission, electromagnetic testing (ET), gamma- and x-radiologic testing (RT), leak testing (LT), liquid penetrant testing (PT), magnetic particle testing (MT), neutron radiologic testing (NRT), ultrasonic testing (UT), intrared testing (IRT), and visual testing (VT). Terminologies are explained not only with text, but also with diagrams (figures) in some cases.
The terms found in ASTM E1316-13 are intended to be used uniformly and consistently in all nondestructive testing standards. The purpose of the standard is to promote a clear understanding and interpretation of those NDT standards in which they are used.
Oversight for ASTM NDT standards is provided by committee E07 and the compilation of these documents can be found in the Volume 03.03 of the complete set of ASTM standards. These volumes are available in both paper and CD Rom format. However, if you choose to use them, you need to review the status of the individual standards regularly, since in this case Document Center’s monitoring service only covers the annual updates of the volume itself.
