ASTM A370 2016 is here!

ASTM A370 2016, “Standard Test Methods and Definitions for Mechanical Testing of Steel Products,” has just been released.  It’s  a series of test methods that cover the mechanical testing of steels, stainless steels, and other related alloys.  You’ll use these tests to determine properties that may be required in a product specification.  The 2016 Edition replaces the previous 2015 Edition which is now obsolete.  And it is a frequently used standard, often among our top 20 best sellers in any given year.

This is a 60-page standard, so finding the changes can be a bit of a challenge.  Document Center recommends using a Red-Line Edition to solve this problem.  When you purchase an ASTM Red-Line, you get your new release plus a copy of the previous edition “marked-up” so you can see all the updates.  It is provided for a nominal premium and will more than make up for the added cost with the time savings you’ll experience.

In this case, the new ASTM A370 2016 Edition has an additional ASTM standard in the referenced documents section.  Reference to this new document replaces Annex A7.  Additionally, Annex A9 has been deleted with the information formerly in this section now integrated into the relevant product specifications.  Your authoring committee A01 also notes that a precision and bias statement has been added in Section 30.  And Annex A3 has been revised so that you can test parts greater than 8 inches in length using Method 1.

One other thing to note:  ASTM A370 seems to be revised at least annually, and sometimes twice a year or more.  This makes it a perfect candidate for inclusion in a Standards Online cloud-access subscription service from Document Center Inc.  This annual service includes all updates within the subscription period at no additional cost.  Check it out!

You’ll want to order a copy of this new edition if you’re using the standard.  So head to Document Center’s webstore at www.document-center.com and place your order now.  Here’s a direct link to the order page for ASTM A370 for your convenience.  And if you have further questions or want to know more about our products and services, please contact our staff by phone (650-591-7600) or email (info@document-center.com).  Make us your Standards Experts!

New Editions released for 3 Best-selling ASTM standards: ASTM A240, ASTM A370, and ASTM A480

I’ve blogged about all 3 of these ASTM standards before, since they are some of the most frequently requested standards Document Center sells.   We want to keep you posted when new issues are released, so here is the latest information on ASTM A240, ASTM A370, and ASTM A480.

ASTM A240/A240M-11b, “Standard Specification for Chromium and Chromium-Nickel Stainless Steel Plate, Sheet, and Strip for Pressure Vessels and for General Applications.”  This is the third revision for 2011, and replaces the A240/A240M-11 and A240/A240M-11a editions.

ASTM A370-11a, “Standard Test Methods and Definitions for Mechanical Testing of Steel Products.”  The second revision for 2011, replacing A370-11.

ASTM A480/A480M-11b, “Standard Specification for General Requirements for Flat-Rolled Stainless and Heat-Resisting Steel Plate, Sheet, and Strip.”  The third revision for 2011, superseding the A480/480M-11 and A480/A480M-11a editions.

These ASTM standards are available from Document Center Inc.  in red-line editions.  These are a quick and easy way to compare all of the changes between the current, active standard and the previous version.  You get copies both of the new edition and the previous edition with the markup visible to show you additions, deletions and other changes to the old text to create the new.  There is a slight increase in the price of the standard to cover the cost of this service.

Just order on Document Center’s website, www.document-center.com, and request the redline edition in your order notes.  Or contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  Not all ASTM’s have redline editions, but when they are available they can save you a lot of time and money.

ASTM A370, Standard Test Methods and Definitions for Mechanical Testing of Steel Products – New 2011 Edition available

ASTM-A370 2011 Edition titled “Standard Test Methods and Definitions for Mechanical Testing of Steel Products” has just been released.  These test methods cover procedures and definitions for the mechanical testing of steels, stainless steels, and related alloys.  The new 2011 edition replaces the previous 2010 issue.

ASTM-A370 test methods center on Ductile vs. Brittle Behavior.  Body-centered-cubic or ferritic alloys exhibit a significant transition in behavior when impact tested over a range of temperatures. At temperatures above transition, impact specimens fracture by a ductile (usually microvoid coalescence) mechanism, absorbing relatively large amounts of energy. At lower temperatures, they fracture in a brittle (usually cleavage) manner absorbing appreciably less energy. Within the transition range, the fracture will generally be a mixture of areas of ductile fracture and brittle fracture.

The temperature range of the transition from one type of behavior to the other varies according to the material being tested. This transition behavior may be defined in various ways for specification purposes.

The specification may require a minimum test result for absorbed energy, fracture appearance, lateral expansion, or a combination thereof, at a specified test temperature.

The specification may require the determination of the transition temperature at which either the absorbed energy or fracture appearance attains a specified level when testing is performed over a range of temperatures. Alternatively the specification may require the determination of the fracture appearance transition temperature (FATTn) as the temperature at which the required minimum percentage of shear fracture (n) is obtained.
