EN Editions of the ISO 10685 series on Ophthalmic optics, Spectacle frames and sunglasses electronic catalogue and identification, just released

EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) has been around for a while and any number of industry sectors have been working over the years to develop standardized methods of storing and transmitting data about their products, customers, and so on.  Now the efforts of the optical industry are paying off with the release of the ISO 10685 series of standards.  And the European Union has recently adopted these documents as EN standards as well.

Intended to provide support for manufacturers, distributors, opticians, laboratories, retailers and publishers, these 3 new documents  cover product identification, commercial information and technical information.  The EDI information addressed is for identifying and cataloging spectacle frames and sunglass frames (including sunglass clip-ons).

The original ISO series is:

  • ISO 10685-1:2011, Ophthalmic optics — Spectacle frames and sunglasses electronic catalogue and identification — Part 1: Product identification and electronic catalogue product hierarchy
  • ISO 10685-2:2012, Ophthalmic optics — Spectacle frames and sunglasses electronic catalogue and identification — Part 2: Commercial information
  • ISO 10685-3:2012, Ophthalmic optics — Spectacle frames and sunglasses electronic catalogue and identification — Part 3: Technical information

And the EN adoptions (listed here in the official English language editions):

  • BS EN ISO 10685-1:2011, Ophthalmic optics. Spectacle frames and sunglasses electronic catalogue and identification. Product identification and electronic catalogue product hierarchy
  • BS EN ISO 10685-2:2012, Ophthalmic optics. Spectacle frames and sunglasses electronic catalogue and identification. Commercial information
  • BS EN ISO 10685-3:2012, Ophthalmic optics. Spectacle frames and sunglasses electronic catalogue and identification. Technical information

New ISO 25539-2 2012 Edition updates the International Standard on Cardiovascular implants – Endovascular devices – Part 2: Vascular stents

ISO 25539-2:2012, “Cardiovascular implants – Endovascular devices – Part 2: Vascular stents,” has just been released and is available now from Document Center Inc.  The 97-page standard specifies requirements for vascular stents, based upon current medical knowledge.  It is part of a three document series.

With regard to safety, ISO 25539-2 gives requirements for intended performance, design attributes, materials, design evaluation, manufacturing, sterilization, packaging and information supplied by the manufacturer. It should be considered as a supplement to ISO 14630, which specifies general requirements for the performance of non-active surgical implants.

This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition (ISO 25539-2:2008). This minor revision updates the normative references and provides minor editorial changes to Clause 8 and Annex D for clarification.

Here’s a list of the complete 25539 series:

  • ISO 25539-1, Cardiovascular implants – Endovascular devices – Part 1: Endovascular prostheses
  • ISO 25539-2, Cardiovascular implants – Endovascular devices – Part 2: Vascular stents
  • ISO 25539-3, Cardiovascular implants – Endovascular devices – Part 3: Vena cava filters

FYI: ISO/TS 15539 serves as a rationale for the requirements of this part of ISO 25539.  Technical Specification ISO/TS 15539 was developed by first identifying the design requirements for these devices and listing the potential device and clinical failure modes. Tests were then identified to address each of the failure modes. The requirements provided in ISO 25539-2 are based on that assessment.

This document has been adopted by the European Union as EN ISO 25539-2.  We normally provide the document in the official English language Edition (BS EN ISO 25539-2 2012 Edition).

All current and many obsolete ISO standards can be purchased online in both paper and pdf format from Document Center’s website, www.document-center.com.  Or consider contacting us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  Territorial restrictions may apply.

New ISO/IEC Guide 37 2012 released at the end of the year for Instructions for use of products by consumers

ISO/IEC Guide 37:2012, “Instructions for use of products by consumers,” has just been released and is available in both paper and pdf format at Document Center Inc.  This 3rd Edition for the joint ISO/IEC Guide establishes principles and gives recommendations on the design and formulation of instructions for use of products by consumers.  It cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO/IEC Guide 37:1995), which has been technically revised.

These types of instructions should help people use products and product-related services in a correct and safe manner. They may be found in a number of different formats:
— texts,
— words,
— graphical symbols,
— diagrams,
— illustrations, and/or
— audible, visible or tactile information.

These instructions can be on the product itself or its packaging, or in accompanying materials, like leaflets, manuals, media and websites.

A number of things have occurred since the last publication of the Guide in 1995:

a) IEC 82079-1, “Preparation of instructions for use – Structuring, content and presentation – Part 1: General principles and detailed requirements,” has been published.  Even with an International Standard, the effectiveness of the information supplied with a product (unlike safety requirements) has rarely been subjected to independent verification or certification.

b) There has been a substantial increase in cross-border movement of both fully-packaged products and of consumers.  This means that manufacturers can’t assume every consumer can read the official language of the country where the product itself was offered for sale.

c) The committee has also recognized that for many products there will be a proportion of older consumers and consumers with disabilities who can use the product safely and independently when given adequate information, but who are unable to gain access to this information in the usual way — most often because the size of print on the product is too small.

This means that ISO/IEC Guide 37 3rd Edition has been revised to take into account both the above developments and the many research studies into the effectiveness of product instructions and warning labels.

All ISO and IEC standards are sold on the Document Center website, www.document-center.com (territorial restrictions apply).  Or you may prefer to get in touch with us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  Like you, our customers have many questions regarding these documents.  We’re always happy to help you understand the standards you need.

New ANSI/API Spec 5L 45th Edition released – Specification for Line Pipe

The new ANSI/API Specification 5L 45th Edition, “Specification for Line Pipe,” was released 12/2012 and is now available from Document Center Inc.  This Standard specifies requirements for the manufacture of two product specification levels (PSL 1 and PSL 2) of seamless and welded steel pipes for use in pipeline transportation systems in the petroleum and natural gas industries.

This new revision was generated in order to strengthen requirements to ensure quality, reduce potential for non-conforming pipe and provide improved tools for communication between manufacturer and purchaser.

A summary of some of the key requirements are:
– Enhanced requirements for selection and qualification raw material suppliers (plate and coil),
– Increased frequency for tests of mechanical properties,
– An allowance for digital radiography in lieu of film,
– Identification and validation of critical variables throughout all manufacturing processes (steel melting, plate/coil rolling, pipe forming, etc.) to assure suitable mechanical properties, and
– Additional re-test requirements in case of tensile test failure.

Most of the changes to the 45th Edition of API Specification 5L were made to incorporate the requirements from the previously published Errata/Addenda into the main specification.

In addition, changes were made to Section 11.4,  Marking of pipe to multiple grades.

API Standards can be purchased from Document Center Inc. at our webstore, www.document-center.com.  Or you may prefer to contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  We are here to assist you not only with your standards purchases, but also with those questions you’ll have from time to time about the documentation you use.

New MIL-HDBK-1222 Revision E on General Style and Format of U.S. Army Work Package Technical Manuals

Back in the day, I used to write a column for the Society for Technical Communication’s Journal on the Status of Technical Manual Specifications and Standards.  I’d provide information on new and changing documents in the FSC classification category “TMSS” as well as other documents of interest to technical writers.  So when I see major document revisions in this area, I’m always interested!

Now there’s been a new MIL-HDBK-1222 Revision E released and we have it here at Document Center Inc.  The Handbook, titled “Guide to the General Style and Format of U.S. Army Work Package Technical Manuals,” provides non-regulatory guidance and information for the preparation of technical manuals (TMs) required to operate and to maintain the various types of equipment and weapon systems within the Department of the Army.  In other words, being a handbook, the document provides specific suggestions on creating these TM’s but cannot be called out as a procurement requirement by the Department of Defense.

Appendix A of the handbook provides development guidance for the preparation of Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs). Appendix B provides development guidance for the preparation of page-based TMs.

Changes in this new MIL-HDBK-1222E are extensive, so don’t expect to find lines in the margins letting you know where they are.  It is the first complete revision of the handbook since 2004 and supersedes the MIL-HDBK-1222D with changes 1 through 3 released in March 2008.

Users of the handbook will find 16 pages of introductory material, including the table of contents and 42 pages of the actual document itself.  The balance of the 271-page document provides samples and examples by the use of a number of tables and the two Appendices.

All current, publicly available U.S. military specifications and standards (as well as many obsolete editions) are available from Document Center Inc.  Order at our webstore, www.document-center.com, or contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  We’ve been selling these documents since our inception in 1982.  Customers still prefer to order from us as our prices are low and our update notification service is excellent.  Order the standards you need from us and find out for yourself how superior our service is.

The Corrigendum 1 is a 2 page correction for Section 7.9.3.  It involves changes for 3 symbols, all found in Table D.2 on Safety signs.  The Corrigendum includes both the original symbols and titles and the replacement symbols and titles for the 3 rows involved.

You’ll want to have this Corrigendum if you’re using the Edition 3.0 and Amendment 1 separately or using the consolidated Edition 3.1.  The changes involved are pertinent for both formats.

Document Center has been selling IEC standards under license agreement since the 1990’s (territorial restrictions apply).  You’ll find them in both paper and pdf format at our webstore, www.document-center.com.  Or contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  We have been assisting our customers with their standards purchases and questions for over 30 years!

New ANSI/BHMA A156.18 2012 Edition on Materials and Finishes for Builders Hardware

The new ANSI/BHMA A156.18 2012 Edition, “Materials and Finishes,” has just been released by the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association and is available now from Document Center Inc.  It is the first revision of the standard since 2006.

ANSI/BHMA A156.18-2012 contains a description of types of finishes on various base materials and divides them into categories.  It does so by the use of a numbering code system which identifies these base material and finishes.

Only finishes produced by three or more manufacturers are listed and are numbered starting with 600. Numbers 001 through 599 are reserved for individual manufacturers to use, as they desire for their own unique finishes.

Performance test methods for finishes are also part of this standard.  You’ll also find requirements and exemptions concerning appearance.  It includes criteria for viewing comparative finishes to the BHMA match plates and establishes five categories of finishes.

The finish test methods, code numbers and finish descriptions contained in this standard are intended to apply to the builders hardware industry. However, the standard is suitable for use in other industries.

All BHMA Standards are available from Document Center Inc. in both pdf and paper format under license agreement.  Order at our webstore, www.document-center.com.  Or contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  We’re here to assist you with all your standards requirements and questions.
