New MIL-HDBK-1222 Revision E on General Style and Format of U.S. Army Work Package Technical Manuals

Back in the day, I used to write a column for the Society for Technical Communication’s Journal on the Status of Technical Manual Specifications and Standards.  I’d provide information on new and changing documents in the FSC classification category “TMSS” as well as other documents of interest to technical writers.  So when I see major document revisions in this area, I’m always interested!

Now there’s been a new MIL-HDBK-1222 Revision E released and we have it here at Document Center Inc.  The Handbook, titled “Guide to the General Style and Format of U.S. Army Work Package Technical Manuals,” provides non-regulatory guidance and information for the preparation of technical manuals (TMs) required to operate and to maintain the various types of equipment and weapon systems within the Department of the Army.  In other words, being a handbook, the document provides specific suggestions on creating these TM’s but cannot be called out as a procurement requirement by the Department of Defense.

Appendix A of the handbook provides development guidance for the preparation of Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs). Appendix B provides development guidance for the preparation of page-based TMs.

Changes in this new MIL-HDBK-1222E are extensive, so don’t expect to find lines in the margins letting you know where they are.  It is the first complete revision of the handbook since 2004 and supersedes the MIL-HDBK-1222D with changes 1 through 3 released in March 2008.

Users of the handbook will find 16 pages of introductory material, including the table of contents and 42 pages of the actual document itself.  The balance of the 271-page document provides samples and examples by the use of a number of tables and the two Appendices.
