New IEC 60063 Edition 3.0

IEC 60063, “Preferred number series for resistors and capacitors,” has just been revised.  It withdraws and replaces the previous 2nd Edition from back in 1963(that edition was originally numbered IEC 63).  It is considered a technical update and is available now from Document Center Inc.  You can purchase it in paper format, for pdf download, and as part of our Standards Online multi-user subscription service.

The document provides you with a series of preferred values for the resistance of resistors and for the capacitance of capacitors.  This series then results in a defined numeric resolution that you’ll use to mark and code your products.  These are the E series numbers that come with either 2 or 3 significant digits.  Tables provide you for the values for each.

What are the changes in the Edition 3.0 for IEC 60063?  Here’s what the committee has to say:

  • It is a complete editorial re-write of the original material.
  • The information on a relationship between and E Series and the tolerance of a resistance or capacitance value of a respective component has been revised.
  • Advice on a possible deduction from the marking of a component to an associated E Series and to an associated tolerance has been introduced.

Since this is a technical update, you’ll need the new copy if you use the standard.  Purchase it online from Document Center Inc. at our webstore, www.document-center.com.  Or contact our staff by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com) if you need more information or assistance.  We have been providing folks like you with Standards and other compliance information since 1982.  Make us your Standards Experts!
