New CGA P-1 12th Edition – Safe Handling of Compressed Gases in Containers

CGA P-1, “Standard for Safe Handling of Compressed Gases in Containers,” has just been updated and the new 12th Edition is available from Document Center Inc. now.  This new update replaces the 11th Edition,  which is now obsolete, and all other previous revisions as well.  You’ll use it to meet accepted best practices if you handle compressed gas in containers.  This includes those of you who are gas distributors or suppliers.

CGA P-1 is called out in the CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) and is referenced by publications from both the ICC (International Code Council) and NFPA (National Fire Protection Association).  And if you search the internet, you will find a copy of the standard posted in archive.org and other locations.  This publication was set up to support the “Inclusion by Reference” function that allows for the reference to industry standards in U.S. regulations (the CFR).

Should you use the copy that you’ll find on the Internet?  Well, you’ll find that actually a number of CGA (Compressed Gas Association) standards have been referenced in our regulations, particularly in Title 29 CFR Part 1910.  But if you look harder, guess what?  All the editions that are cited are from the 1960’s!  And all have been withdrawn and replaced many years ago.  So you can  see a free copy of CGA P-1 on the internet — It’s just that it’s the 5th Edition and as you can see the current publication is now the 12th Edition!

So, while it’s good to know exactly what the U.S. federal government expects as per it’s regulatory requirements, you will still have an exposure to legal liability by working with information that is so out-dated.  In other words, you’ll not be meeting current best practices if you choose to ignore the latest editions of these standards.

The CGA P-1 is a primary source for compressed gas safety.  If you handle such materials, you’ll want the new edition to make sure that your handling protocols are not exposing you to unnecessary risk.  Get your copy from Document Center Inc. by ordering at our webstore, www.document-center.com.  Or contact our staff by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  You’ll get our free update notification service with your purchase.  Make Document Center Inc. your Standards Experts!
