New ASTM A751 2014 Edition for the Chemical Analysis of Steel Products

I’ve been noticing this week how standards updates can be generated by the data in other referenced documents.  For example a series of AMS standards (AMS-4985, AMS-4991 and AMS-4992) have all been updated to reflect the need to better align the content with referenced document ASTM-E1447.  The new edition of ASTM-A751, “Standard Test Methods, Practices, and Terminology for Chemical Analysis of Steel Products,” is another example of this type of update.

This is the first revision of ASTM-A751 since 2011.  It has been issued to bring the referenced documents section back up-to-date.  Updates in the new revision remove the references to analysis method standards that have been withdrawn.

You’ll want the copy of this new update if you use this popular standard.  It’s a listing of test methods, practices, and guides that relate to the chemical analysis of steel, stainless steel, and other related alloys.

This document reflects ASTM’s long-standing dominance in the field of testing and materials.  You’ll get a useful definitions section covering terms for analysis and elements.  Guidance is given on various requirements, with recommendations for what standards to use for specific tasks, how to do the analyses, and how to record results.  Even issues like significant numbers and rounding procedures are addressed.

Of course, the 6 page document is focused on the topic at hand, as are all ASTM standards.  It shows a basic tenet of the organization – Write documents for use in commerce, direct, narrowly defined but complete in relevant details.  Only special modifications and exceptions need be added when necessary.
