MIL-PRF-19500 P Semiconductor Spec updated by Amendment 2

MIL-PRF-19500, “Semiconductor Devices, General Specification for,” has just been released as the updated edition Revision P with Amendments 1 and 2 interfiled.  This means that you’ll replace your entire Revision P or Revision P with Amendment 1 with this new update.  You’ll also want to be aware that you’ll need to comply with the new revision by September 10, 2014.

The specification is one of the key semiconductor specs, written for use by the U.S. military during procurement of any products that contain semiconductor devices.  It is not only used by the military, but also by the space community as well.  Since these applications require high performance and dependability standards, their requirements are also widely used by industry in general.

Performance requirements in general are defined in the main body of the publication, with eight appendixes detailing additional requirements for definitions, quality requirements, and so on.

The document is intended to be used with what’s called specification sheets — sub-documents that address each individual type of semiconductor that might be required.  An example might be the MIL-PRF-19500/157, “Semiconductor Device, Diode, Silicon, Temperature Compensated Voltage-Reference, Types 1N941B-1, 1N943B-1, 1N944B-1, 1N945B-1, 1N946B-1, 1N941BUR-1, 1N943BUR-1, 1N944BUR-1, 1N945BUR-1, and 1N946BUR-1, JAN, JANTX, JANTXV, and JANS, Radiation Hardened (Total Dose Only) JANTXVM, D, L, R, F, G, H, and JANSM, D, L, R, F, G, and H.”

Of course, the next big question for all users of MIL-PRF-19500 is “where are the changes?”  There’s a number of ways standards developers can assist the user to find changes in an update.  In this particular case, the writers have provided you with asterisks in the margins.  You are warned that this has been done as a convenience only — You’re responsible to make sure that you’ve evaluated the entire new revision for any changes that might affect your products.
