New ASTM A108 for Cold-Finished Steel Bar

ASTM is well known for it’s material standards and ASTM A108 is one of the more popular standards in this category.  Now the new ASTM A108 2013 Edition, “Standard Specification for Steel Bar, Carbon and Alloy, Cold-Finished,” has been released.  You can purchase the new revision in paper format or as a pdf download from Document Center Inc.  It’s the first revision of the document since 2007.

ASTM A108 covers cold-finished carbon and alloy steel bars produced in straight length and coil to chemical compositions.  The steel can then be heat-treated to be used for machining into components or just to be used on an as-is basis.

You’ll be able to identify the grade of steel required by grade numbers or by chemical composition.  And much of the value of the standard lies in the A1 Annex, which specifies the permissible variation in quality characteristics in both inch-pound and metric units.

The nine tables in the Annex are:

  • A1.1 Size Tolerances for Level One Cold-Finished Carbon Steel Bars, Cold Drawn or Turned and Polished
  • A1.2 Size Tolerances for Level One Cold-Finished Alloy Steel Bars, Cold Drawn or Turned and Polished
  • A1.3 Size Tolerances for Level Two and Level Three Cold Finished Round Bars
  • A1.4 Straightness Tolerances for Cold Finished Bars
  • A1.5 Length Tolerances for Cold Finished Steel Bar
  • A1.6 Across-Corner Tolerances for Hexagon and Square Cold Drawn Steel Bar
  • A1.7 Surface Roughness Average (Ra) Tolerances for Cold-Finished Steel Bar
  • A1.8 Surface Discontinuity Tolerances for Cold-Finished Steel Bar
  • A1.9 Surface Decarburization Tolerances for Cold-Finished Steel Bar

There’s quite a few changes to the ASTM A108 2013 Edition, and you can find them listed at the end of the specification itself.  Or if you’d like more precision, you can purchase the redline edition of the document.  It costs a bit more, but you get not only the copy of the new 2013 Edition, but also a copy of the previous 2007 with all the changes notated by strike-outs and red text.

Document Center has been selling the ASTM Standards under license agreement with ASTM since the 1980’s.  So we not only have all current ASTM standards on file, but also many obsolete editions.  While most folks will just be using the current edition, there are some needs for the older documents (think court cases and historical product reviews).

You will be able to buy these publications at the Document Center website, www.document-center.com.  Just search for the item you need in the search field at the top right-hand corner of our homepage.  If you have any questions or prefer to work with a real person, then contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  Document Center understands that customer service is very important for our customers.  When you contact us, you’ll be able to ask for information on the publications you’re interested in.  And our staff will be able to give you answers or direct you to resources that can help.
