API Spec Q1 9th Edition, “Specification for Quality Management System Requirements for Manufacturing Organizations for the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry,” has just been released. You’ll find that the API Spec Q1 9th Edition contains over 85 new clauses and five new sections. Because there are so many changes to the Specification, the migration period will last until June 2014, when all users of the document will be expected to meet the new requirements.
The Annex B and Annex C will be especially helpful, providing a cross reference from the 9th Edition to the 8th in the first and the reverse, 8th Edition to the 9th, in the second.
The document is used to provide certification requirements for organizations that manufacture products or that provide manufacturing-related services. The requirements of the Q1 are consistent with the other API Quality documents like API Spec Q2, “Specification for Quality Management System Requirements for Service Supply Organization for the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industries.”
API states that the goal of the Spec Q1 is to “provide the minimum requirements for the development of a quality management system that provides for continual improvement, emphasizes defect prevention, and strives to minimize variation and waste from manufacturing organizations.” When used for certification, it allows a company to demonstrate its ability to provide reliable products and services, fulfilling customer and legal requirements.
