MIL-STD-1530 D released!

MIL-STD-1530, “Aircraft Structural Integrity Program (ASIP),” has just been updated.  The new Revision D has been released and is available now from Document Center Inc.  You can get this standard in both paper format and for pdf download.  It is also available as part of our Standards Online company-wide subscription service.

What is an “ASIP”?  It’s a program to assure lifecycle airworthiness of aircraft structures.  This is based on ways to evaluate and certify structural integrity throughout the life of the aircraft.  It is a process that occurs on a regular basis and needs to be designed into this type of system.    MIL-STD-1530 is used as a foundation to set up an ASIP for all U.S. Air Force aircraft.  It’s also used by other forces if they choose.

How is an ASIP set up?  It is comprised of a number of “primary tasks.”  Task 1 is developing criteria for program goals during the design phase.  Task 2 is correctly defining the environment in which the aircraft will operate.  Task 3 is testing to confirm that structural design choices will meet the environmental definitions.  Task 4 is setting up a certification and maintenance management system for the aircraft’s structural requirements.  Task 5 is the implementation of the management plan.

This means that the structural data developed during an ASIP is used for the long-term operation and maintenance of USAF aircraft and equipment.  For this reason, the standard has many areas for consideration when developing and executing an ASIP.  Some examples are structural design criteria, corrosion prevention and control, loads analysis, and stress and strength analysis.  Additionally, a methodology for providing on-going information access to the military is an essential component of this program.

What are the changes in the new MIL-STD-1530 D?  Since they are extensive, the caretaker of this document has not put black lines in the margins.  This means that you will need to review the entire new update and see how it will affect your program(s) or future contracts.
