ISO 9227, Corrosion tests in artificial atmospheres – Salt spray tests, has just been revised. The new 4th Edition is dated this month and is available from Document Center Inc. You can get a copy in either paper format or for pdf download. This revision replaces the previous 3rd Edition from 2012 (now obsolete).
Here at Document Center, we have been selling the ASTM B117 for salt spray testing for years. When I first took over the company, I was surprised at how many people use this test. But of course, our customers soon clued me in that electronics and other products developed for marine applications need to be reviewed for corrosion resistance.
The ISO 9227 International Standard for this corrosion test was first introduced in 1990. This 4th Edition does contain technical updates. Here is the information that the committee has provided on where the main changes are:
- There are new definitions in a number of areas, including reference material, reference specimen, test specimen and substitute specimen.
- It is now possible to check the test apparatus during the test operation itself.
- Clause 4 has been modified.
- Clause 7 has been summarized.
The ISO 9227 is a 26-page document. It covers three corrosion tests — Neutral salt spray (NSS), Acetic acid salt spray (AASS) and Copper-accelerated acetic acid salt spray (CASS). You can test material with or without corrosion protection. The ASTM B117 is one of the 12 items in the bibliography.
