ISO 3452 series on Penetrant Testing Updated

Penetrant Testing is a frequently used tool for identifying cracks and other flaws in the surface of materials, usually metals.  I’ve blogged about the process (also called Liquid Penetrant Testing) recently in my blog on AMS 2644 and my blog on ASTM E1417/E1417M.  Since this is a non-destructive test, it can be used at any stage of a product’s development – what are called in-process, final, and maintenance (in-service) examinations.  If you use penetrant testing, you’ll want to be aware of the new revisions in 3 of the 6 parts of the ISO 3452 series on “Non-destructive testing – Penetrant testing.”

Changes were made to Part 1 in July and now Parts 2 and 3 have also been updated.  The remaining 3 parts (4 to 6) are currently stable, that is they are not under revision at this time.  Here’s details on the 3 updated editions, as well as the numbers and titles of the balance of the series:

  • ISO 3452-1, 2nd Edition, “Non-destructive testing – Penetrant testing – Part 1: General principles” – This is your general overview document, providing the requirements for process and control of your tests, but lacking the specifics regarding suitability and test equipment.  Changes in this new revision are technical in nature, and include a table referring to the various testing products
  • ISO 3452-2, 3rd Edition, “Non-destructive testing – Penetrant testing – Part 2: Testing of penetrant materials” – Both parts 2 and 3 provide you with the methods for determining what products to use for your application and how to monitor the necessary properties of those products.  For part 2, the new 3rd Edition is again a technical revision.  Changes were made to the referenced documents section, to Tables 1, 4, 8 and 9, Clause 5.1 was added and Clause 6.6 was updated, and Annex B was removed.  Additional editorial changes were also made.
  • ISO 3452-3, 2nd Edition, “Non-destructive testing – Penetrant testing – Part 3: Reference test blocks” – Another technical revision, with the new 2nd Edition replacing the former (and now obsolete) 1st Edition with Corrigendum 1.  No guidance was given regarding where the changes have been made.
  • ISO 3452-4, 1st Edition, “Non-Destructive Testing — Penetrant Testing — Part 4: Equipment”
  • ISO 3452-5, 1st Edition corrected reprint, “Non-Destructive Testing – Penetrant Testing – Part 5: Penetrant Testing at Temperatures Higher Than 50 Degrees C”
  • ISO 3452-6, 1st Edition corrected reprint, “Non-Destructive Testing – Penetrant Testing – Part 6: Penetrant Testing at Temperatures Lower Than 10 Degrees C”
