New AMS 2644 Revision F for Liquid Penetrant Inspection

Liquid penetrant testing is one of the most widely used NDTs (non-destructive tests) available.  So when a frequently-used standard on the topic changes, it means we send out a lot of notifications to our customers here at Document Center Inc.  And that’s what’s just happened now that there’s a new Revision F for AMS 2644, “Inspection Material, Penetrant.”

AMS 2644 was originally released in 1996 and replaced the now obsolete MIL-I-25135 in 1998.  It defines various penetrant materials and the classification, technical requirements, tests and test procedures for them.  It is used by prime contractors to set up an approved products list (otherwise known as a QPL) for their own use as well as by their suppliers.

Please note:  It does not cover special application products like liquid oxygen compatible, high or low temperatures, thixotropic, reverse fluorescent, or dye precipitation penetrant systems.

The 28-page AMS 2644F was developed as a result of the usual 5 year review process.  It has been updated to make the following changes:

  • The referenced standards section was revised and this affected Table 2.
  • Table 3 was also revised, again as a result of changes to the referenced standards.
  • Sections 3.2.3 and 4.5.1 on material safety data sheets were updated.
  • Revisions have been made to
    • Section 3.2.6 (requalification)
    • Section 3.3.1 (safety)
    • Section 3.3.2 (corrosivity)
    • Section 3.3.8.6 (removability)
    • Section 4.4.7.2 (exposure equipment)
    • Section 4.4.11.5 (specimen cleaning)
    • Sections 4.4.5.2.1 and 4.4.11.2 (test specimens)
    • Section 4.4.8 (thermal stability)
    • Section 4.4.9 (tank life) and
    • Section 4.4.15 (developer bioresistance)
  • Clarification has been made to processing parameters:
    • Section 4.4.5.1.2
    • Section 4.4.11.2

There is clearly a need for this specification for military contract work.  This is reflected in the fact the the qpl (qualified products list) for the document is maintained by AFRL/RXSA (the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory).

If you use this specification, you’ll want to get the new Revision F right away, since there are so many changes throughout the document.  And you’ll want to choose a supplier that not only provides you with the standard, but also provides you with notification of any changes to the publication that will occur in the future.  Document Center is that source.
