ISO 1996-1, “Acoustics – Description, measurement and assessment of environmental noise – Part 1: Basic quantities and assessment procedures,” has just been updated. The new 3rd Edition is available now from Document Center Inc. in paper format, for pdf download, and as part of our Standards Online enterprise solution. This is a technical revision and cancels and replaces the previous 2nd Edition from 2003.
Environmental noise can have a long-term injureous affect on humans. So it’s essential to correctly measure ambiant noise when appropriate. You’ll note that there is wide differences in acceptable environmental noise from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. The committee expects that part of the mission of this particular standard is to assist in creating appropriate regulations when possible.
Of course, a technical revision to a standard means that changes have occurred and you’ll need to get a copy of the new edition if you use this publication. For the ISO 1996-1 2016 Edition, the committee points out the following areas where changes have been made or new data added:
- Subclauses 3.6, 6.3.1, 6.5, 8.1, and 8.2.1 i)
- Annex A, Annex D, Annex E, Annex F, Annex G and Annex H
