New IEC 61882 2nd Edition – HAZOP

IEC 61882, “Hazard and operability studies (HAZOP studies) – Application guide,” has just been updated.  The new Edition 2.0 is a technical revision and replaces the now obsolete Edition 1.0 from 2001.  It’s for risk identification using a methodology for “hazard and operability study” or HAZOP.  This is a structured technique for examining a defined system to identify risks associated with operation and maintenance.

HAZOP was originally used to spot hazards in a particular system.  Now the concept has been expanded to include any “deviations from the expected.”  This means that your examination for risks will help you recognize potential causes of operational disturbances and production deviations.  This in turn means that you’ll have a plan for preventing non-conforming products (or at the very least, have a plan for dealing with occurances that can lead to non-conforming products).

If you’re already using this publication, you’ll want to know what the changes are.  Of course, as a technical revision, you’re going to need a copy of the Edition 2.0 in order to continue to be compliant.  When you get this update, you’ll find changes in the following areas (as noted by the authoring committee):

  • The definitions section of IEC 61882 has been brought into alignment with the ISO 31000 and ISO Guide 73 terms and definitions.
  • An improved case study of a procedural HAZOP has been added.

IEC 61882 is a complete review of the HAZOP process, from discussing the key features to applications and the procedure itself.  Your Annexes are informative in nature, covering the methods of recording and examples of HAZOP studies.  An 18-item bibliography completes the standard.
