9 ASME Standards Reaffirmed – What does this mean?

ASME has recently announced that 9 ASME standards have been reaffirmed.  This is a normal result of a 5-year review cycle that is the norm in the U.S. standards developing community.  However, each organization manages the process a bit differently.  So customers at my company, Document Center, often want to know how an ASME reaffirmation impacts their use of the standard.

A reaffirmation or reapproval means that the document is still valid — the standard has been reviewed and is still OK to use just as it is.

Many associations reprint their documents and include the reaffirmation information on the cover of the standard.  This often results in a user repurchasing a standard that has had no change to the technical content.  With stringent conformance requirements by some auditors, these companies feel compelled to have each new issue on hand.

For ASME, since the reaffirmation process is just a confirmation that the contents remain valid, the notification to the customer base is done by the inclusion of the reaffirmation date in the cataloging information.  Also, a sticker is placed on the cover of the item for each new sale after the reaffirmation takes place.

If you have purchased a copy of an ASME standard from Document Center and later it is reaffirmed, you can request a copy of the new sticker to put on the outside cover of your publication.  This sticker is provided at no charge and can be considered proof that your copy remains up-to-date.

Here’s a list of the 9 items recently affirmed:
