TT-C-490 Amended – Chemical Conversion Coatings

TT-C-490, “Chemical Conversion Coatings and Pretreatments for Metallic Substrates (Base for Organic Coatings),” Revision F has just been updated with the release of Revision F with Amendments 1 and 2 interfiled.  The new 34-page federal specification is widely used throughout industry, so many of you will need this new edition.  Changes are extensive.  Get your copies now from Document Center Inc.

When is TT-C-490 used?  It covers processes, pretreatments, and pre-primer surface preparation for metallic substrates prior to coating applications.  Why?  To delay the onset of corrosion and to promote the adherance of primers.  It’s called out in many government contracts, including those issued by the DoD (U.S. Department of Defense.)

The new update states that changes are too extensive to allow for those black lines in the margins that are often used to identify areas where revisions have been made.  I will say that they’re correct — there are a lot of changes.  The scope has been expanded, the reference documents section has been revised, and so on.  Of particular note is the expansion of the toxicity clearance from strictly to the Army supply system to the Government supply system in general.  And of course, the migration from the MSDS to SDS reporting remains on track.

You’ll also be pleased to note that in this new edition of TT-C-490F, inspection responsibilities have been expanded to include both ISO 9000/IEC 17025 or NADCAP certified facilities.

New TT-C-490 Revision F released for Chemical Conversion Coatings and Pretreatments for Metallic Substrates (Base for Organic Coatings)

TT-C-490 Revision F, “Chemical Conversion Coatings and Pretreatments for Metallic Substrates (Base for Organic Coatings),” has just been released and is available now from Document Center Inc. in either pdf or paper format.  This federal specification replaced MIL-C-490 and MIL-P-14504 and is one of the most commonly used plating specifications we sell.

TT-C-490F covers processes, pre-treatments, and pre-primer surface preparations of metallic substrates for coating applicators.  It covers metal surface preparation for delaying corrosion initiation and promoting primer adhesion. In addition, this specification covers the testing requirements for qualification of conversion coatings, the pre-treatments and pre-primer coatings.

The new 24-page revision has extensive changes from the now-obsolete 17-page TT-C-490E from 2002, so there are no lines in the margins showing you the updated material.   Changes appear to have been made throughout the document.
