ASTM F1446 2013 Edition, “Standard Test Methods for Equipment and Procedures Used in Evaluating the Performance Characteristics of Protective Headgear,” has just been released. ASTM F1446 is widely used to confirm that specific models of helmets meet the expected performance requirements.
Originally released in 1993, ASTM F1446-13 covers the following areas:
- The ability of headgear to limit head acceleration,
- The strength and stability of the system to keep the headgear on the head, including how it’s attached to the headgear itself, and
- Specialized tests for particular uses that might be applicable to one or another type of product.
The document was developed to provide reliable and repeatable tests for helmets. The authoring committee has the goal of reducing the likelihood of serious injury or death from impacts to the head while a helmeted user is involved with sports or leisure activities. The result? ASTM F1446 and related standards have significantly improved the performance of protective headgear during the last decades.
