New ASTM F1446 2013 released on Testing Protective Headgear

ASTM F1446 2013 Edition, “Standard Test Methods for Equipment and Procedures Used in Evaluating the Performance Characteristics of Protective Headgear,” has just been released.  ASTM F1446 is widely used to confirm that specific models of helmets meet the expected performance requirements.

Originally released in 1993, ASTM F1446-13 covers the following areas:

  • The ability of headgear to limit head acceleration,
  • The strength and stability of the system to keep the headgear on the head, including how it’s attached to the headgear itself, and
  • Specialized tests for particular uses that might be applicable to one or another type of product.

The document was developed to provide reliable and repeatable tests for helmets.  The authoring committee has the goal of reducing the likelihood of serious injury or death from impacts to the head while a helmeted user is involved with sports or leisure activities. The result? ASTM F1446 and related standards have significantly improved the performance of protective headgear during the last decades.

I recently blogged on additional New Standards for Protective Headgear.  So you may be interested in reviewing these new releases on this topic.

Document Center has been provided test method standards to industry since 1982.  We have been reselling ASTM standards under license agreement since the 1980’s as well.  These documents are essential in providing a method of evaluating the real world performance of products and materials prior to the actual use of the goods.

You can order ASTM F1446-13 and all ASTM Standards from Document Center’s web store at www.document-center.com.  Or you can contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  We’re here to help you define the standards you need and to make sure that the editions you’re using are the latest updates!  Make Document Center Inc. you Standards Experts.

New ASTM F1446 2012 Edition on Test Methods for Protective Headgear (Helmets)

ASTM F1446-12, “Standard Test Methods for Equipment and Procedures Used in Evaluating the Performance Characteristics of Protective Headgear,” has just been released and is available from Document Center Inc. in both paper and pdf format.  It is used by helmet and headgear manufacturers to evaluate the effectiveness of their products in preventing head injuries.

The purpose of this document is to provide reliable and repeatable tests for the evaluation of various types of protective headgear. Use of these test methods in conjunction with the specific individual performance standards is intended to reduce the likelihood of serious injury and death resulting from impacts to the head sustained by individuals participating in sports, recreation, and other leisure activities in which protective headgear is worn.

Some things that are tested by ASTM F1446 are:

  • The ability of the item to limit head acceleration and
  • The strength and stability of the retention system (the assembly that secures the helmet on the wearer’s head) and its attachment to the protective headgear.

This is the first revision of the document since April 2011.  If you are using the obsolete edition and want to know the changes that are included in the new 2012 Edition, ask us for the Redline Edition of the standard.  ASTM Redline editions come with both the new edition and a marked-up copy of the previous edition so that you can easily identify all changes to the new issue.

Document Center has been providing our customers with authorized copies of the ASTM standards since the 1980’s.  You can purchase them at our webstore, www.document-center.com.  Or contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  Our staff can assist you with all your standards requirements and questions.
