New NFPA 495 2013 Edition: Explosive Materials Code

There’s a new NFPA 495 2013 Edition, “Explosive Materials Code,” and it’s available now from Document Center Inc.  This code  applies to the manufacture, transportation, storage, sale, and use of explosive materials.

NFPA 495 identifies reasonable levels of safety for explosive materials like blasting agents, water gel and emulsion materials, smokeless propellants, black powder propellants, and small arms ammunition. But it does not apply to transportation of such material when used for military purposes or when under jurisdiction of the federal government.

This is the first revision since 2010 and it’s expected to remain current until 2017.  What’s new?  The 2013 Edition provides a major re-write of the ground vibration chapter, including:

  • Additional requirements pertaining to use of seismographs
  • An expanded Air Overpressure section that adds in a maximum allowable limit of air overpressure, 133 dB

This important Code is essential for explosives manufacturers, small arms manufacturers, distributors, or retailers, or enforcement personnel such as fire and building officials.
