ISO 22325 – Emergency Management

ISO 22325, “Security and resilience – Emergency management – Guidelines for capability assessment,” has just been issued.  This new standard helps any organization evaluate their emergency management scheme.   You’ll use this standard to meet regulatory requirements, improve your processes, work better with your community and other organizations, share best practices, and promote on-going improvements.

ISO 22325 makes capability assessment easier by defining four maturity levels and eight indicators for you to use.  Then, an assessment process is outlined with information on how to plan, collect, analyze and report relevant data.  Of course, your business model and practices will generate a unique mix of prevention, mitigation, preparedness, and response and recovery actions.

The standard’s four maturity levels have to do with how complex your emergency response planning and execution protocols are.  Since the levels are tiered, this gives you a path to better risk management for unexpected crises.  Many of the components of the indicators will be familiar to those of you already using management system standards.   They include leadership, resource management, information and communication, and so on.

The assessment process is covered in detail.  And to help you get started, the standard includes an assessment template in Annex A.  This template reviews the various indicators, with a column for the level that your organization is at for each.  Another column allows for comments.  A 5-item bibliography completes the 18-page document.
