New EN 62911 – Safety Testing for A/V and IT equipment

EN 62911, “Audio, video and information technology equipment. Routine electrical safety testing in production,” has just been released.  The new 2016 Edition replaces the EN 50512 2014 Edition (now obsolete).  And it is the European adoption of the IEC 62911 Edition 1.0 from 1/2016.

What kinds of equipment are covered by the tests in EN 62611?  These are routine electrical safety tests for complete equipment, sub-assemblies or components that comply with EN 60065 (IEC 60065), EN 60950-1 (IEC 60950-1) or EN 62368-1 (IEC 62368-1).  In addition, the equipment needs to be powered by an a.c. mains supply or d.c. mains supply.

When are these tests applied?  They are intended to be used during or after manufacturing in order to detect manufacturing failures and/or unacceptable tolerances in manufacturing and materials.

What kinds of tests are included?  Tests are specified for determining the resistance of protective bonding systems and for electric strength.  Tables are provided with the various test voltages required.

And additional information on conformance and record keeping is part of this standard as well.

Do these tests have to be performed at my manufacturing facility?  Not necessarily. The optimal location for the routine electrical safety tests can be defined by the equipment manufacturer and reviewed under the conformity assessment scheme.

Can I continue to use EN 50514 instead?  While the various nations of Europe have until 7/21/2017 to adopt this new EN 62911, you should make the migration to the new replacement document as soon as possible.
