New ASTM E1417/E1417M 2013 Edition for Liquid Penetrant Testing

ASTM E1417/E1417M, “Standard Practice for Liquid Penetrant Testing,” has just been released as the new 2013 Edition.  The document establishes the minimum requirements for conducting liquid penetrant examination of nonporous metal, and nonmetal components.  It’s a widely used standard among our customers.

The Practice replaces the now obsolete MIL-STD-6866, as well as the previous 2011 Edition (editorially corrected in 2012).  The tests are applicable to in-process, final, and maintenance (in-service) examinations.

These processes can be used for the detection of discontinuities, such as lack of fusion, corrosion, cracks, laps, cold shuts, and porosity, that are open or connected to the surface of the component under examination.

You’ll find the changes to this new edition include:

  • A new section 6.7.4.1
  • An updated Table 1
  • A revised Section 7.8.4.2(1) and
  • An updated Keywords section

If you need more detail on the changes, you’re welcome to purchase the redline edition, which comes with not only the new 2013 Edition, but also a copy of the previous 2011 Edition with all the changes clearly marked.

We invite you to review our page of ASTM standards in the Volume 03.03 if you are looking for additional ASTM Non-Destructive Tests.  To see a broader spectrum of such documents, you can review the standards on the Document Center List of Standards on Environmental Testing.
