ASTM B633 2015 Released

ASTM B633, “Standard Specification for Electrodeposited Coatings of Zinc on Iron and Steel,” has just been updated.  The new 2015 Edition replaces the ASTM B633 2013 Edition which is now obsolete.  This is an technical revision to an essential plating spec, used throughout industry.  Here at Document Center we’ve sold hundreds of copies of the document over the years.  You’ll want a copy if you use this specification.

What exactly does ASTM B633 2015 address?  The specification covers the materials and processes to use for the electrodeposition of zinc coatings on iron or steel goods to protect them from corrosion.  It also includes information on the various tests you’ll use to confirm thickness, adhesion, corrosion resistance and so on.  This means the coating requirements and the sampling process (including specimen preparation) are part of the publication as well.

What’s new in the ASTM B633 2015 Edition?  An additional test has been added to give you another option when it comes to determining the thickness of the coating.  This means that there is one more ASTM standard included in the referenced document section as well.

New ASTM B633 2013 Edition released for Electrodeposited Zinc Coatings

ASTM B633, “Standard Specification for Electrodeposited Coatings of Zinc on Iron and Steel,” is a long time favorite for plating applications.  Now the new ASTM B633 2013 Edition is available in either paper format or pdf download.  The document covers material and process requirements for electrodeposited zinc coatings applied to iron or steel articles to protect them from corrosion.

You’ll find extensive changes in the ASTM B633-13 Edition from the previous 2011 Edition.  These updates center on the addition of RoHS requirements, added to limit the exposure of workers and others from exposure to toxic metals.  This means the addition of two additional types, V and VI, to permit non-chromate passivate treaments for the replacement of hexavalent chromium.

Most changes occur in the first 3 pages of the 6 page document.  For example, in the referenced documents section, there’s now the addition of the ASTM F1941 and ASTM F1941M, the inch and metric versions of “Specification for Electrodeposited Coatings on Threaded Fasteners.”

As you can see, RoHS – The Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive – is having a profound impact on plating practices.  This new ASTM publication is another instance of industry working hard to promote safer processes as led by legislative direction.

Document Center customers have been purchasing the ASTM publications from us since the 1980’s.  You can get them easily by using our web store, www.document-center.com.  Or you can contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).

Not only do you get the standard you need, but you will receive timely update information when the publication is revised.  This added feature helps many of our customers keep their documentation in good order.

And now, when you register at our website, you’ll be able to see a list of the standards you’ve ordered from us.  They’re displayed two ways.  One is a list with the most recent documents placed at the top.  The other is by the order date.  Items that have changed since you purchased them are highlighted for easy identification.

We hope you’ll take advantage of the many benefits of using Document Center for your conformance documentation needs.  We’re your Standards Experts!

New 2011 Edition for ASTM B633, Standard Specification for Electrodeposited Coatings of Zinc on Iron and Steel

ASTM B633, “Standard Specification for Electrodeposited Coatings of Zinc on Iron and Steel,” has been updated to the new 2011 Edition.  This is one of Document Center’s best selling ASTM standards and is an essential Zinc Plating specification.  This specification covers requirements for electrodeposited zinc coatings applied to iron or steel articles to protect them from corrosion.

The coatings covered are to be provided in four standard thickness classes in the as-plated condition or with one of three types of supplementary finishes. The surfaces of the articles can under go pre-plating basis metal cleaning, pre- and post-coating treatment for reducing the risk of hydrogen embrittlement, and reactivation and supplementary treatments.

Coatings should be sampled, prepared, tested and conform accordingly to specified requirements as to appearance (luster and workmanship), thickness, adhesion, corrosion resistance, and hydrogen embrittlement.

ASTM B633 replaced the now-obsolete QQ-Z-325, the federal specification for Electrodeposited Zinc Coating.  It does not cover electrodeposited zinc-coated steel wire or sheets (originally  ASTM A591/A591M covered sheets, but it was replaced in 2005 with ASTM A879/A879M).

This new ASTM specification, all current ASTM standards, and many of the obsolete revisions not available at ASTM are all on our Document Center website, www.document-center.com.  Feel free to contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com) should you prefer.
