New AMS 5604 Revision F issued for Aircraft Corrosion Resistant Steel

AMS 5604 Revision F, titled “Steel, Corrosion Resistant, Sheet, Strip, and Plate, 16.5Cr – 4.0Ni – 4.0Cu – 0.30Cb, Solution Heat Treated, Precipitation Hardenable,” has just been released.  It replaces AMS 5604E, which is now obsolete.  The specification covers a corrosion-resistant steel in the form of sheet, strip, and plate.

This steel has typically been used for parts requiring corrosion resistance and high strength up to 600 Degrees F (316 Degrees C).  Such parts may require welding during fabrication.  However, other uses are also found for this type of steel.

SAE has warned that certain processing procedures and service conditions may cause this type of steel to become subject to stress-corrosion cracking.  SAE recommends the use of ARP 1110 to minimize such conditions.
