SAE Committee G-21 on Counterfeit Materiel has been busy lately and has just released the new SAE AS 6174, “Counterfeit Materiel; Assuring Acquisition of Authentic and Conforming Materiel.” It’s available from Document Center Inc. now.
AS 6174 2012 Edition standardizes practices to:
a. maximize availability of authentic materiel (made from the proper materials using the proper processes with required testing,)
b. procure materiel from reliable sources,
c. assure authenticity and conformance of procured materiel
d. control materiel identified as counterfeit, and
e. report counterfeit materiel to other potential users and government investigative authorities.
This aerospace standard is part of an on-going standards developing effort to provide guidance for industry on this topic. Other standards of interest are: AS 5553, “Counterfeit Electronic Parts; Avoidance, Detection, Mitigation, and Disposition,” ARP 6178, “Fraudulent/Counterfeit Electronic Parts; Tool for Risk Assessment of Distributors,” GEIA TB-0003, “Counterfeit Parts and Materials Risk Mitigation,” ASTM F1448, “Standard Guide for Selection of Security Technology for Protection Against Counterfeiting, Alteration, Diversion, Duplication, Simulation, and Substitution (CADDSS) of Products or Documents,” and IEC 62668-1, “Process management for avionics – Counterfeit prevention – Part 1: Avoiding the use of counterfeit, fraudulent and recycled electronic components.”
As you know, counterfeit material and goods pose a tremendous liability for companies, as well as sapping the economy. We applaud the standards community for developing protocols on how to identify and remove these potentially hazardous materials from the supply chain and protect customers worldwide.
