NAS 410, “NAS Certification and Qualification of Nondestructive Test Personnel,” has just been updated. The new Revision 4 is now available from Document Center Inc. This standard is the replacement for the MIL-STD-410, “Nondestructive Testing Personnel Qualification and Certification,” which was cancelled back in the 1990’s. NAS 410 is one of three main U.S. documents on this topic. The others are the ASNT’s SNT TC 1A (a guideline) and ASNT’s CP-189 (also a standard like the NAS 410). It is also technically equivalent to the European Standard, EN 4179, “Aerospace series. Qualification and approval of personnel for non-destructive testing.”
Why are there multiple documents on the same topic? The NAS 410, as the successor to the MIL-STD-410, is called out in government contracts and in aerospace applications. The ASNT publications cover other applications.
What does the document specify? It provides you with the framework you’ll need in order to insure that your staff is appropriately trained to do non-destructive testing procedures. It assigns the number of hours of both training and experience needed for a number of different tests and levels of certification.
What kinds of changes are in the new revision? Mainly, the committee has been working to change the wording for Specific “Open Book” Examinations to remove some ambiguity created by the wording in Revision 3. Conflict with AIA interpretations and PRI/NADCAP audits is also addressed.
