ISO/TR 17098, “Packaging material recycling – Report on substances and materials which may impede recycling,” has just been released. You can purchase this ISO Technical Report from Document Center Inc. now. The new standard was developed to support the use of ISO 18604, as well as ISO 18601. It is part of the move to promote sustainability through the use of International Standards.
The ISO/TR 17098 covers the following areas:
- materials, combinations of materials, or designs of packaging that may create problems in collecting and sorting before material recycling,
- substances or materials that have the potential to create problems in the recycling process, and
- the presence of substances or materials that may negatively influence the quality of the recycled material.
In short, it is a general review of substances, materials and components that need to be considered in the design and control of packaging as defined in ISO 18604. It does this by describing substances or materials that can cause problems or inhibit the recycling process.
The information in ISO/TR 17098 is presented in the form of several tables. These tables cover Aluminum, Glass, Paper and paperboard, Plastic, Steel, and Wood. For each specific material type, the table has columns with data on design criteria, materials and substances integral with the packaging, and comments.
