New ISO 9000 Draft for Quality Fundamentals

It’s no surprise that with the release of the ISO 9001 draft, there’s also the release of the ISO 9000 draft as well.  This ISO/DIS 9000 is titled “Quality management systems – Fundamentals and vocabulary.”  It represents the next generation of thinking on quality management concepts.  And it is available now from Document Center!

The new public release draft will have the same comment period as the ISO/DIS 9001.  That is from July 10, 2014 to October 10, 2014.  During this time, you’ll be able to provide the committee that’s writing the standard with your feedback.  That’s why the draft has numbering on each line of text.  You’ll be able to pin-point your comments to the exact portion of the document you’d like changed.

When the committee has completed it’s work, the new 4th Edition will replace the previous 3rd Edition from 2005.  This release is expected to be during the fall of 2015.  It is a technical revision, with a revised clause sequence and the adoption of new quality management principles from the draft of the ISO 9001.  It also contains some new concepts.

Again, the two new drafts represent a move to harmonize concepts and processes over the whole range of management standards.  This is intended to make it easier for companies that need to comply with more than 1 of this group of standards.

You’ll also notice the expansion of notes fields into the text.  This is to clarify the document, making consistent interpretation and implementation easier.  And the new Annex A further illuminates the changes to the new revision.  It discusses the changes in the concepts behind a number of the new terminologies, like the move from “products” in the 2005 edition to “products and services” in this new draft.

Another new feature is the Annex B, covering Quality Management Principles.  This is a recap, defined by the committee, of the principles that make up the ISO 9000 program.  And each defined principle then has a “rationale” which explains why you should be using it in your business.

Additionally, there’s a new listing of the ISO 10000 “portfolio” of quality management standards.  This Annex C lists the series and how they relate to both the ISO 9000 and the ISO 9001.  It will help you understand why the “harmonization” of requirements has been a top priority of the committee.

Here’s the list:

  • ISO 10001, Quality management – Customer satisfaction – Guidelines for codes of conduct for organizations
