New ISO 55000 Series – Asset Management Standards

Every business has assets, and managing those assets can be a challenge.  Now the ISO standardization process has issued three new standards to help you out.  The new ISO 55000 series covers common practices that can be applied to a wide range of assets within a wide array of organizations.  Not only will you understand how to identify and manage assets, but you’ll improve the realization of value from those assets.  And yes, the series can be used for certification!

There are three standards composing the series.  They are:

ISO 55000, 1st Edition, “Asset management – Overview, principles and terminology”

This first document of the series gives you the overview of the field of asset management and a lengthy list of terms and definitions.  Annex A gives you specific information on key asset management activities.  Annex B is a visual representation of the relationship between key elements of any asset management system.   And the two-page bibliography not only covers pertinent standards but also a number of books on the subject as well.

ISO 55001, 1st Edition, “Asset management – Management systems – Requirements”

This second in the series is detailed discussion of the particulars of asset management.  You’ll cover terms and definitions again, the organization and it’s context, the roles of leadership, planning, and support, operational issues like managing change, performance evaluation, and of course, process improvement.

This part is the section you’ll certify to, should you go that route.  Or you could certainly use it internally, or even as a roadmap for setting up contracts for third party vendors.  It will help you assess your ability to meet legal, regulatory and contractual requirements as well.

ISO 55002, 1st Edition, “Asset management – Management systems – Guidelines for the application of ISO 55001”

Here the particulars of the ISO 55001 document are expanded, giving you guidance on how to implement the concepts involved.  After all, it’s one thing to say you need to understand the organization and its context.  It’s another thing altogether to understand what that means!

So here you will have the same visual representation of the key elements of the asset management system that you found in the ISO 55000 document.  But now the clauses of the ISO 55001 that relate to each of those elements is clearly noted.  This expansion and clarification will really help the user understand how to implement the concepts of the previous two parts of the series.

The ISO 55000 series follows the new model for management system standards.  So you’ll find the formatting to follow that of the ISO 9000 quality series, etc., while providing methodologies supporting the plan-do-check-act model for continuous improvement.

If you’ve used the PAS-55-1 and PAS-55-2 in the past, this new series will be familiar to you.   That’s because the ISO series has evolved from those original PAS 55 standards.  FYI: While the two PAS 55 documents are still current, the ISO 55000 series has been adopted as BS ISO 55000, BS ISO 55001, and BS ISO 55002.
