There’s a new ISO 14889 3rd Edition just out — “Ophthalmic optics – Spectacle lenses – Fundamental requirements for uncut finished lenses.” The new 12-page 3rd Edition cancels and replaces the 2nd Edition from 2003. There are technical changes to the new release.
Use this standard for regular glasses — it is not applicable to protective eyewear. It covers a lens with both surfaces optically shaped but not yet edged (“uncut finished”). The initial sections of the standard include the usual scope, referenced documents, and definition material.
It is in the Section 4, Fundamental requirements for spectacle lenses, that the changes in this revision occur. Updates have been made to subclauses 4.1, 4.4, 4.5.1 and 4.5.2.
The standard then provides the user with the test method section, covering tests in general plus inflammability and mechanical strength tests. Lastly, ISO 14889 specifies the identification information the manufacturer will need to include with the packaging of the lens.
