Many organizations are getting their ISO 14000 Environmental Management Certification. If you’re part of such a company, you’ll want to know about this new update. The ISO 14031 2nd Edition, “Environmental management — Environmental performance evaluation — Guidelines,” has just been released. This 2013 Edition is a technical revision of the previous 1st Edition from 1999, which is now obsolete (withdrawn).
The ISO 14031 covers a process known as environmental performance evaluation (EPE). It’s a system that uses key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure, evaluate and communicate environmental performance. It is used by both large and small organizations to support an environmental management system (EMS), but can also be used independent of an EMS as well.
The EPE will generate data and information that’s use to support the environmental policy and objectives of the organization. This process of on-going data collection and analysis allows for tracking to see if targets are being met. And the data can also support verification of conformity with legal requirements and other compliance necessities.
FYI: ISO 14031 2013 Edition does not establish the actual environmental performance levels, just the development of the key performance indicators and data gathering activities to monitor the performance itself.
