The new 2014 Edition of BS EN 61000-4-6 has just been released. Titled “Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Testing and measurement techniques. Immunity to conducted disturbances, induced by radio-frequency fields,” replaces the previous 2009 Edition. FYI: It is the adoption of the IEC 61000-4-6 2013 Edition which was released late last year.
The test method provided is used for RF immunity, to determine how effective electronic equipment is when submitted to radio-frequency interference in the range of 150 kHz to 80 MHz. Sometimes this type of interference can be merely annoying, but it can also interact in a dangerous way with equipment like medical devices and so on. This particular test can be tricky, so close attention to the standard is advised.
The new document is 88 pages in length, up from 60 pages in the 2009 Edition. Changes from the previous issue include the following:
- Use of the CDNs (Coupling and Decoupling Networks),
- Calibration of the clamps,
- reorganization of the section on test setup and injections methods (clause 7),
- Changes to Annex A on EM and decoupling clamps,
- Changes to Annex G, which covers the measurement uncertainty of the voltage test level now,
- and 3 new Annexes – H on AE (auxiliary equipment) impedance measurement, I on port to port injection, and J on amplifier compression and non-linearity.
