New BS EN 14025 on Tanks to Transport Dangerous Goods

If you use hazardous material in your business and have operations in Europe, you’ll want to pay attention to the new 2013 Edition for BS EN 14025.  Titled “Tanks for the transport of dangerous goods. Metallic pressure tanks. Design and construction,” the new revision replaces the previous 2008 Edition.

The European Standard specifies the minimum requirements for the design and construction of metallic pressure tanks.  The tanks covered are those having a maximum working or test pressure exceeding 50 kPa (0,5 bar), for the transport of dangerous goods by road, rail and sea.

This European Standard includes requirements for openings, closures and structural equipment.   It does not cover requirements of service equipment. For tanks for the transport of cryogenic liquids, EN 13530-1 and EN 13530-2 apply.

When working with this standard, you’ll also need to pay attention to the European Agreements for the transport of dangerous goods by rail (RID) or by road (ADR).   There are times when the regular revisions of these agreements can result in non-compliances for folks meeting the EN 14025 requirements.  In all cases, the RID/ADR requirements take precedence.

You’ll use this standard for calculation rules and proofs demanded by the according chapter of the RID/ADR Codes for these types of transportation tanks.

RID/ADR Sub-sections 6.8.2.1, 6.8.3.1 and 6.8.5 apply to the design and construction of pressure tanks.  And the relevant requirements of RID/ADR, columns 12 and 13 of Table A to chapter 3.2, 4.3 and 6.8.2.4 apply as well.

You’ll find that for structural equipment subsections 6.8.2.2 and 6.8.3.2 can apply. And the definitions of RID/ADR 1.2.1 are referenced.  For portable tanks, you’ll also use Chapter 4.2 and Sections 6.7.2 and 6.7.3 of RID and ADR.

Why use this standard?  The Dangerous Goods Directive requires these types of tanks to comply with the RID and ADR provisions for both construction and use.  BS EN 14025 makes this easier for you.
