New BS 8888 2013 Edition for Technical Product Specifications

They say no man is an island, and in the world of manufacturing the use of supply chains is making the concept a reality for many businesses.  So it is essential that your products have well written technical product specifications for both manufacturing and verification.  The ISO system of technical product specification development is used by many, and the BS 8888 is designed to support that activity.  Titled “Technical product documentation and specification,” the 2013 update is an overview of the process.  It is intended to make it easier to maintain a good technical specification system.

You’ll use the document to understand and implement the ISO standards for both technical product documentation and geometrical product specifications.  It will help you identify the standards you need to use for these purposes.  This is more than a discussion of engineering drawings.  You’ll also find information on such topics as the use of 3D CAD models to define component geometry.

So here in one document, there’s an index to the relevant ISO standards, information on the key elements from those standards needed for implementation, and additional tips on how to use the standards where useful.  There’s also references to additional British and European standards that can provide guidance on the use of the applicable ISO standards.  And there’s Annexed information on both examples of geometrical tolerances and their requirements as well as on enhanced security.

BS 8888 2013 Edition is a complete technical revision of the previous 2011 Edition.  It has been entirely restructured, making it easier to find the information you need.  It has much more information on dimensioning, which the users of the standard have requested.  And there’s more language focused on clarifying the requirements, rather than just parroting the language in the ISO source documentation.

You may ask why this type of process is important.  The use of a system for documentation like that of ISO can improve the way you create your technical specifications.  This will lead to better results throughout your supply chain, with less ambiguity and a smoother transition from design to manufacture.  In the end, you’ll see reduced development time and increased speed to market.
