New ASTM E408 2013 Edition updates Test Methods for Normal Emittance of Surfaces

ASTM E408, “Standard Test Methods for Total Normal Emittance of Surfaces Using Inspection-Meter Techniques,” has just been updated with the release of the new 2013 Edition.  The standard is used to measure thermal radiation.

The ASTM E408-13 covers 3 methods for using inspection meters to determine the total normal emittance of various surfaces, like roofs, reflective  insulation systems, spacecraft thermal control and so on.  Methods A and B measure radiant energy reflected from the specimen.  Method C on the other hand measures the near-normal spectral reflectance (radiant energy reflected from the specimen as a function of wavelength).   Then it converts that information to a total near-normal emittance.

The Test Method Standard provides the user with information not only on conducting the tests but also with the limitations of each method.  You’ll also find that the Section 5 has a list of the information that should be reported at the conclusion of the testing.

Document Center has been selling ASTM standards since the 1980’s.  Go to our web store, www.document-center.com, to find the ASTM standards you need, like the new ASTM E408.  Or contact us by phone (650-591-7600), fax (650-591-7617) or email (info@document-center.com).  Our staff will be happy to assist you with your purchases or questions.

If you would like to see more standards on the same topic, Document Center has a couple of tools that can help you out.  First, you can go to our page for the ASTM volume on Composite Material Standards for Aerospace and Aircraft.  Or review our Document Center List of Standards on Properties of Surfaces.  Both pages will have a wide variety of standards on this topic and can help you identify the documents you’re looking for.
