New ASME Y14.100 2013 Edition on Engineering Drawing Practices

There are some documents that remain at the top of the sales lists year after year after year.  And the ASME Y14 series of drafting standards are amont those publications!  ASME Y14.100, “Engineering Drawing Practices,” has just been updated, which means a lot of you will be needing the new copy.  It will ship at the end of the month.

ASME Y14.100 establishes the essential requirements and reference documents applicable to the preparation and revision of engineering drawings and associated lists.  Traditionally, it has been paired with ASME Y14.24,”Types and Applications of Engineering Drawings,” ASME Y14.34, and ASME Y14.35M, “Revision of Engineering Drawings and Associated Documents.”

This new ASME Y14.100 2013 Edition will also replace the ASME Y14.42, “Digital Approval Systems,” which is now obsolete and should no longer be used.

The appendices for this standard have provided the information needed for it to replaced MIL-STD-100 (now obsolete).  You can also use ASME Y14.100 when preparing Technical Data Packages (TDPs) under MIL-STD-31000 (formerly MIL-DTL-31000).

Contents include an extensive References section, as well as Chapters on Definitions, General Drawing Practices, Drawing Titles, Numbering, Coding, and Identification, and Markings on Drawings.

The ASME Y14 series is the fundamental set of standards on drafting.  These documents have changed over the years to reflect the use of  computerized systems, such as CAD/CAM programs.  Now ASME is considering how to make the standards themselves more functional in this digital world.
