The popular API 650, “Welded Tanks for Oil Storage,” has been updated and the new 12th Edition is available from Document Center Inc. The standard establishes minimum requirements for material, design, fabrication, erection, and inspection for vertical, cylindrical, above-ground, closed- and open-top, welded storage tanks in various sizes and capacities for internal pressures approximating atmospheric pressure (internal pressures not exceeding the weight of the roof plates). Please note that a higher internal pressure is permitted when additional requirements are met.
This standard applies only to tanks whose entire bottom is uniformly supported and to tanks in non-refrigerated service that have a maximum design temperature of 93 °C (200 °F) or less.
You can use this standard either for metric (SI) or inch-pound (IP) installations, but the unit of measurement does need to be agreed-upon by the manufacturer and the purchaser.
This new API Standard 650 12th Edition replaces the API Std 650 11th Edition from June 2007, with three Addenda and an Errata (dated 11/2008, 11/2009, 8/2011 and 10/2011 respectively.) Past practice includes black lines in the margins to identify changes.
