New 2016 NFPA 72 – Fire Alarm Code

NFPA 72, “National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code,” has just been updated.  The new 2016 Edition will be available in October but can be pre-ordered from Document Center Inc. now.  Known as the smoke alarm standard, the Code covers the application, installation, location, performance, and inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire alarm and emergency communications systems.  FYI:  The 2016 Edition has a new classification that permits the use of networks and Ethernet when interconnecting a fire alarm system.

Who uses the NFPA 72?  Designers, engineers, contractors, installers, and inspectors rely on this Code for rules that meet current best practices, or the state-of-the-art.  You’ll find it integrated into many ordinance requirements as well, making compliance mandatory in many jurisdictions.

What’s in the NFPA 72?  The 369-page Code has 15 Chapters covering the complete range of issues faced by industry, including Documentation, Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance, and Emergency Control Function Interfaces.  An additional 8 Annexes provide information on such topics as Speech Intelligibility, a Sample Ordinance Adopting NFPA 72, and Wiring Diagrams and Guide for Testing Fire Alarm Circuits.  It includes requirements for mass notification systems used for weather emergencies, terrorist events, biological, chemical, and nuclear emergencies as well.

What’s new in the 2016 NFPA 72?  Major changes have been made to Chapters 21 (Emergency Control Function Interfaces) and 24 (Emergency Communications Systems.)  Level 2 and Level 3 pathway survivability requirements have been updated.  And there’s a new Annex G on Guidelines for Emergency Communication Strategies for Buildings and Campuses.
