ISO/TR 17302, “Nanotechnologies – Framework for identifying vocabulary development for nanotechnology applications in human healthcare,” has just been issued. Although it sounds like it only addresses terminology, actually the technical report covers concepts relating to healthcare and nanotechnology. It reviews those areas that can be expected to be positively impacted by developments in the industry. And it provides a taxonomic framework (to use in your research proposals?) for the field since a common vocabulary is a core part of evaluating potential areas for further review.
ISO/TR 17302 is focused on what’s termed “nanomedicine.” These applications range from diagnosis (think using nanoparticles to find and image tumors) to monitoring to gene therapy, drug delivery (asthma treatments) and other “nanopharmaceuticals.” All these areas are currently being explored due to the amazing properties of nanomaterials. Yet, as a new science, many of the terms used to describe the types of particles and their properties are as yet unresolved.
ISO/TR 17302 covers these various potential applications one by one. An analysis is made of the areas where there is interest and positive developments. And discussion is made of the terms used to describe various materials and attributes for each of those areas. To follow how the terminology is developing within the clinical value chain, the report identifies areas where there is a need for additional terminology. Current words in use along with their definitions are covered in Annex A. Annex B provides you with a table of ontology and terminology resources, including reference URL’s. A 51-item bibliography completes the publication.
