ISO/TR 14799 Series Updated

The ISO/TR 14799 Series for escalator and moving walk safety standards has just been updated.  The comparison reports are now both 2nd Editions, cancelling the previous 1st Editions which are now obsolete.  They offer folks that are interested in escalators and moving walkways a review and comparison of worldwide standards on the subject.  The revisions to each are technical.

The documents were generated to compare and contrast a set of major escalator standards, those from North America, Australia, Europe, Russia, Japan, and Korea.  In this new release, the codes from Australia, Korea, and Russia have been removed, since those codes are now being harmonized with the others.  Here is a synopsys of each of the new Technical Reports:

ISO/TR 14799-1, “Comparison of worldwide escalator and moving walk safety standards – Part 1: Rule by rule comparison”

This new 174 page 2nd Edition is a comparison of the requirements of selected topics for three main markets: The North American, European, and Japanese.  In the comparison, local deviations (think within the European market for example) are omitted.  The requirements are presented in columnar form:  You’ll see the those of the EN 115-1 in column 1, ASME A17.1/CSA B44-2010 in column 2, and a series of publications from Japan in column 3.  Annex A is a reprint of the figures contained in EN 115-1.  Annex B lists the tables mentioned in the Japanese codes column.  Annex C provides you with a list of referenced documents for each of the three jurisdictions.  And Annex D gives you contact information for the various standardization bodies included in the text.

ISO/TR 14799-2, “Comparison of worldwide escalator and moving walk safety standards – Part 2: Abbreviated comparison and comments”

The new 2nd Edition for Part 2 again is focused on codes from North America, Europe and Japan.   Some useful features of Part 2 include Clause 2.2 on Terminology.  This is a three-column section that includes equivalent terms from each of the jurisdictions covered.  An example would be “high deck balustrades” from North America, which is “balustrade decking” in Europe and “deck board” in Japan.

Next the Technical Report discusses the codes from each of the three locations, including the history and requirements for each.  Clause 3.2 reviews the technical basis and structure of the various codes and standards.  Clause 4 then provides you with a requirement by requirement review.  This highlights the differences between the codes, with comments by the committee for each.

Annex A again reprints the figures found in EN 115-1, Annex B the referenced documents as above, and Annex C is the addresses of the various standards bodies included in the report.

The ISO/TR 14799 series is an unusual review of the status of standards and regulatory requirements around the world.  It is a remarkable document with obvious benefit for those who are involved with manufacturing or purchasing walkways and escalators in various jurisdictions.
