ISO 9687, “Dentistry – Graphical symbols for dental equipment,” has just been updated. The new 2nd Edition is available from Document Center Inc. in paper format, for pdf download, and as part of our Standards Online multi-user subscription service. It replaces the now-obsolete 1st Edition from 1993. And it has numerous technical updates.
Graphical symbols standards are widely used throughout various industries. They specify an easy way to impart information, necessary in many labels and other markings, as well as technical documentation and instructions for use.
ISO 7000 is the source for all graphical symbols of this nature, however, now that the standard is only available as a database it can be difficult to know what symbols are applicable to your industry. And it can be hard to know what the number of the symbol you’re looking for is.
The ISO 9687 covers pictograms (symbols) for dentistry. The first clauses provide you with requirements. This includes the information you need to know on sizing, usage, and how to represent dates and languages. Then there’s a series of tables with the symbols, their titles and the ISO/IEC registration number.
Much of this information is new in this 2nd Edition. The ISO/IEC registration number was not included previously. And there are 3 new Tables in this revision as well: Table 2 on symbols for cleaning, disinfection and sterilization, Table 3 on Symbols for disinfectants used for hygienic purposes, and a Table 4 with other miscellaneous symbols of interest.
