ISO 13065 – A Climate Change Buster!

ISO 13065, “Sustainability criteria for bioenergy,” has just been released.  It’s part the “behind the scenes” work that standards developers have been accomplishing to develop a framework for impacting the emissions infrastructure and reducing green house gases (GHG.)  And it’s release is timely, since the new edition of the ISO 14001 for Environmental Management Systems has just taken place as well.

What is the ISO 13065?  This new standard addresses the production and use of bioenergy.   It shows you how to consider environmental, social and economic impacts that the use of biofuels create.  You’ll learn how to evaluate and compare bioenergy production and products, supply chains and applications.

Bioenergy is used all over the world.  So having an ISO standard means that production, use and trade can now occur within a consistent framework.  Definitions of principles, criteria and indicators for the bioenergy supply chain are provided by the ISO 13065.  It doesn’t matter what kind of bioenergy you’re talking about — it can be any kind of raw material, geographical location, technology or end use.  This means that when you go to identify bioenergy processes and products, you’ll have a common language to use for comparisons.

There’s lots of infrastructure work that needs to be done in order to reduce the amount of GHG’s released on an annual basis.  The use of biofuels is one component in a complex energy picture.  If we want to live in a “low-carbon” world, it’s essential to generate forward motion on many levels.

Standards play a role in the definition and monitoring of GHG emissions (ISO 14064 series, ISO 14065, ISO 14066, ISO 14067 and ISO 14069).  And of course there are a multitude of standards on the various types of non-carbon energies like nuclear, solar, wind, and so on.  To review the various energy standards from ISO, take a look at our Document Center List of Standards on Energy and use the links “tree” to access the type of energy you’re interested in.  To review other environmental standards, use the Document Center List of Standards on Environmental Protection.

Standards provide tools you can use to improve your organization’s carbon footprint.  The new ISO 13065 is just one of a wide-ranging collection of standards provided by ISO to help you make better energy decisions.  Order any of them online at our Document Center webstore, www.document-center.com.  Here is a direct link to the new ISO 13065 order page.  You have flexibility with Document Center — paper format or pdf delivery, credit card payment or purchase orders for U.S. customers, and the ability to order both online and “in person” by working with one of our staff members.  Make us your Standards Experts!
