ASTM E617 2013 Edition, “Standard Specification for Laboratory Weights and Precision Mass Standards,” has just been released. It is the first update of the standard since 1997.
The ASTM E617 Specification covers weights and mass standards used in laboratories. It addresses classes 000 through 7. You’ll find the principal physical characteristics and metrological requirements for weights used in weighing instruments, for verification of those weighing instruments, and for the calibration of weights of a lower class accuracy.
The new 2013 Edition is a major revision of this important calibration specification. It has a total of 16 pages compared to the previous edition’s 7. You’ll find changes throughout, starting with a greatly modified referenced document section. Another example is the Table 1, which now covers the maximum permissible errors for each class, listed by the metric denomination. Previously it was labeled maximum tolerances. The section on certificates has been removed from the Appendixes (nonmandatory information). The Applications Table remains, along with a new Table X2, Abbreviations of Terms.
