EN 9239 – Risk management for aerospace programs

EN 9239, “Aerospace series. Programme Management. Guide for the risk management,” has just been released.  This new European standard was developed by ASD, the Aerospace and Defense Industries Association of Europe.  And although it was written specifically for an aeronautics industry audience, the content can be used successfully by other sectors as well.

The EN 9239 2016 Edition helps you examine risks at the program level.  You can use it to set up your risk management framework or specification — the document is intended to be used in this manner, as a guideline.  Indeed, the process provided by the standard can be a  methodological guide for writing your program’s risk management plan.

So what are the features of EN 9239 that make it so useful?  It:

  • describes a process for controlling program risks within “tolerable” defined boundaries.
  • includes knowledge management concepts related to risk management, in order to capitalize and share lessons learned with other programs.
  • indentifies other useful related risk management documents.
  • includes a typical checklist of program risks for you to use as an example.
  • helps you spot opportunities that can be achieved with the proper use of risk management.

How can you get a copy of EN 9239?  Like all EN (European) standards, the publication is only available in the national adoptions (like BS-EN, DIN-EN, SS-EN and so on).  Document Center Inc. is an authorized distributor of many of these national editions and a good place to purchase your standards.  You can use our webstore, www.document-center.com, to search for and order standards.  Here is a direct link to the order page for BS EN 9239 and to the order page for SS EN 9239 for your convenience.

Which edition should you purchase?  As always, any EN edition is as valid as another.  On occassion, your use of a particular national body conformance assessment organization may make the use of that national body’s adoption a better choice.  Or calling out a specific national edition in your documentation may lock you into that particular publication.  But there is no other compelling legal reason to do so.
