ASTM B733, “Standard Specification for Autocatalytic (Electroless) Nickel-Phosphorus Coatings on Metal,” has just been updated. ASTM B733 is one of Document Center’s top-selling coating specifications. Originally released in 1984, the specification was last updated in 2004 (reapproved in 2014.) It contains the requirements for autocatalytic (electroless) nickel-phosphorus coatings applied from aqueous solutions to metallic products for engineering uses. Similar standards are the AMS 2404 (“Plating, Electroless Nickel” from 2013) and AMS-STD-26074 (formerly MIL-C-26074, “Electroless Nickel Coatings,” stabilized in 2013.)
Since the ASTM B733 technical content has not been changed in a long while, you will want to know where the revisions to the document have occurred. For a complete review, you’ll purchase the Redline Edition of the specification. You’ll get a clean copy of the new 2015 release plus a “marked-up” copy of the previous 2004 R14 Edition as well. You can review the publication page by page to make sure you’ve identified all updates.
However, I can tell you that the bulk of the technical updates are to be found in Appendix XI for the Taber Abraser Wear Test Method. This is a complete revision of the information from the old edition. Every aspect of this section has been modified in some way.
