ANSI/ASSE A10.4 Construction Elevator Safety

A new version of ANSI/ASSE 10.4 was released this year, it’s titled “Safety Requirements for Personnel Hoists and Employee Elevators on Construction and Demolition Sites”.  Anyone who is concerned about the safe use of these devices on their construction or demolition sites will want to pick up this standard.  It’s available now from Document Center, as a hard copy or for PDF download.

Elevators and hoists, whether permanent or temporary, can influence the efficiency of any construction or demolition project.  The safe installation, care, and use of these machines is no different.  ANSI/ASSE 10.4 will help to guide the user  in the proper construction, operation, inspection, and repair of these tools.  Compliance with the minimum requirements laid out in this document can help to prevent the loss of life, limb, and property in construction environments.

This document begins with a general description of what types of elevators and hoists it applies to.  It also includes a large definitions section, to avoid confusion.  Then comes the real, intensive information.  The earlier parts of this document detail construction concerns like erecting and dismantling hoists and towers.  Specific parts and components are addressed, such as hoistway doors and locking devices, overhead beams, foundations and flooring, cars, frames, gates,  as well as electrical wirings, fittings, and fixtures.

The document continues to address many safety concerns.  Issues like overhead clearance, car capacity, speed limitations, weight limitations, a number of sections on counterweights, and many more are provided.  This extensive, 84-page document details nearly every facet of elevator construction for construction-specific uses.  The latter parts of the document lay out the details of safety testing on construction hoists and elevators, as well as elevator maintenance.  This may include replacement, non-operation, and lubrication.

The document is also equipped with two appendices.  The first, an outline designed to guide the user in surveying and documenting the hazards present in their job site.  The second appendix is a checklist to aid in the inspection of construction elevators.
